Mosaic Voices announces launch of 'The Jews of Britain'
Mosaic Voices is now working on a landmark and historic new musical and educational project, 'The Jews of Britain', telling the story through music of the UK’s oldest immigrant community. At a time of resurgence of antisemitism as well as the delegitimisation of the Jewish community, creative and educational work like this is crucial way of opening a window onto Jewish life and exploring Jewish roots in Britain, which are almost 1,000 years old. Your chance to dip a toe into the mystical, spiritual and rare world of ancient Jewish choral music. Learn about Jewish performance styles, with their heart-on-sleeves emotion. Try singing the ancient biblical motifs chanted in Jewish prayers for thousands of years. Find out how to pronounce and sing beautifully in Hebrew and Aramaic and to interpret transliterations. Mosaic Voices were invited to sing Im Nin'alu on BBC1's Sunday Morning Live show on Sunday 4 March. It's a song that was first made famous by Israeli singer Ofra Haza, and loosely based on an ancient Yemenite Jewish melody to a poem written in the 17th century by Shalom Shabazi (1690-1720). New West End Synagogue Mosaic Voices is proud to be the resident choir of the stunning New West End Synagogue in Bayswater, London. The foundation stone of the synagogue was laid on June 7th. 1877, and designed by architect George Audsley. Mosaic Voices sings at all regular and festival services for the synagogue. |
PSALMS - World Premiere
Mosaic Voices’ Composer in Residence, Benjamin Till, has completed the composition of a major new vocal oratorio called ‘PSALMS’, written for Mosaic Voices and solo voices. A groundbreaking and important new work which includes Psalm singing traditions from across the British Isles. The music is sung in Hebrew, English, Welsh, Scots Gaelic, Yiddish and even Aramaic. The film of this work received its world premiere on May 16th, 8pm 2024 , at the Phoenix Cinema, London. The film will be touring to cinemas across the UK in November-December 2024. We are delighted to announce the completion of this unique volume of major new choral works, arrangements and transcriptions of music, both ancient and modern, from the British-Jewish tradition. The volume is the largest new collection of choral scores created for use in synagogues in Britain since 1933. Edited by Michael Etherton and Benjamin Till, the scores are available to download for free with a full book version to follow soon. Commissioning New Music As part of the Blue Book Project, Mosaic Voices commissioned new works from three outstanding composers, following a call-out on BBC Radio 3 to composers across the UK and beyond. The winning composers were Meta Cohen, Anselm McDonnell and Eamonn O'Dwyer. A fourth work was composed by our Composer in Residence Benjamin Till. The new works were premiered in concert on February 16th 2020. |
