Jewish Choral Singing Workshops
Tailor-made according to the abilities of your choir
Your chance to dip a toe into the mystical, spiritual and rare world of ancient Jewish choral music. An opportunity to sing in Aramaic, the language that Jesus spoke, and to open a door into a fascinating and little-known musical tradition.
Learn about Jewish performance styles, with their heart-on-sleeves emotion. Try singing the ancient biblical motifs chanted in Jewish prayers for thousands of years. Find out how to pronounce and sing beautifully in Hebrew and Aramaic and to interpret transliterations. By the end of the workshop you will have a sacred Jewish musical work in Aramaic that you can perform confidently at your concerts in the future. Along the way you will also find about the history of Jewish choral music since the establishment of the Jewish community in England in 1655.
We work together with your musical director or conductor, and workshops will be structured around the needs and abilities of choirs whether the choristers are readers or learn through memorisation. Workshops can take place as one of your regular evening rehearsals or as part of any residential or other course.
Typical Workshop Structure
1.Warm-up and learn Hebrew/Aramaic consonant and vowel sounds
2.Find your authentic Jewish voice and try out typical performance styles
3.Hear and learn to sing basic ancient motifs used in Jewish prayer chanting
4.Find out the brief history of Jewish choral music
5.Learn a sacred Jewish work in Aramaic, phrase by phrase
6.Perform your new Jewish work in full ready for further practice and for use in concerts.
Cost: £150 for a two-hour workshop in your regular rehearsal location (assuming Greater London). Additional travel costs necessary for outside Greater London.
